  • The High and Low of my First Violin Lesson – Well, I was lucky to come across a craigslist listing for an instructor I think will work out perfectly.  My new instructor, Linda, and I exchanged a couple emails back and forth and I was offered a free 45 minute introductory lesson at her home, which to my happiness is conveniently located two blocks from my apartment!  I was kind of nervous heading over there; it almost felt like a match.com date, as I’m thinking whether this stranger and I were going to click.

As I arrived at her home, Linda greeted me in her large fuzzy black slippers, which made me laugh.  I think she and I are close in age. She is Scottish, and grew up in Britain before heading to the States, hence the English accent and wit.  I also met her large, fluffy, cross-eyed black cat, Madame, before we began.

For my first lesson, I learned about tuning my violin, holding the bow properly and before long I was making noise! It was like wrist and elbow yoga, as I could tell I was awakening unused tendons.  I was quite surprised (and she) on how quickly I was taking to my new avocation!  I do think there is an advantage mirroring your instructor and by the end (1 1/4 hours later), I felt I met the right instructor for me.

Unfortunately, although playable, I learned my violin was damaged from the shipping.  The soundboard inside my instrument popped off so I’m not achieving the true sound quality my violin can produce (so that's what was rattling inside!).  Luckily I was in touch with the seller this morning, so I have the instructions on how to exchange it - hopefully as soon as possible.

  • Last Weekend Recap - Last Friday night Samael7 and I got together and were supposed to try out the newest restaurant in the Castro, Lime.   Well, when we showed up sans reservations, we were greeted by hordes of people ahead of us, having the same intentions.  I’ll check it out in a few weeks after the frenzy subsides.  It wasn’t too hard to figure where to go instead, for what is now becoming a regular dining choice - Tallulah!

Saturday I hung around my apartment, patiently waiting for my violin to arrive via FedEx.  It showed up around 5:30 and it is a beauty!  Late that night, Samael7 and I ventured to the Bridge Theatre on Geary to watch local campy drag queens perform their version of “The Bad Seed” before we watched the original black and white version.  I’ve seen it a couple times before, but it was fun to see again, plus the whole audience had the same notion to run across the street to the liquor store and bring in their hootch for the performance and movie – aaahh, only in SF.

Sunday, I had full intention to go to Dore Alley this year.  As I was heading back into the Castro in the afternoon, I was witness to throngs of people crowding the underground and memories of claustrophobia of past Folsom events filled my head.  Either I have to enjoy these events early or pass them up completely.

The workweek has been fairly pleasant and quick and is almost over – yay!  Samael7 is off to Boston for a few days, and I’m off to the Russian River this weekend with some longtime pals.

  • Finally Fulfilling This New Year's Resolution - It's been on my mind for so long that I always wanted to learn to play the violin.  I grew up in a family that always nurtured music in my life.  I grew up with a piano in my home, I played the clarinet, French horn and trumpet, I was awarded a scholarship in junior high to go to a summer music camp in the mountains above Los Angeles, and I was the drum major in my high school marching band but I never was allowed to learn the violin in my youth.  That and the drums.  Why?  Because I have a funny mom.  She thought I would get a double chin playing the violin and I would poke my older brother in the eye with a drum stick (the latter was quite possible.)  Well, as an adult, I never learned to play (that and the guitar), although I tried without success, because I'm left-handed and there's nothing more discouraging than to learn to play an instrument that feels weird and un-natural holding it.  Paul McCartney is a fine example of overcoming this obstacle.  Well, thanks to the internet era, and now thanks to Ebay, I'm now the proud owner of a left-handed violin (c'mon fedex! - gimme gimme gimme!) Now, the next fun part is to find an instructor.  Craigslist has garnered some results so I think I'll find one there unless I find other avenues.

  • The Hostess Diary: My Year at a Hot Spot - My friend Sean turned me on to Gawker.com not too long ago.  As I perused this New York based media gossip website, I couldn't help but share this hilarious account of a hostess in a trendy restaurant.

  • Manic Monday – Nothing much to report, although I had a pleasurable, yet short weekend.  Friday night I met up with Samael7 at the Midnight Sun for a cocktail.  Both of us were kind of exhausted from the previous workweek, so we quickly decided to bail and cabbed over to his place and ordered some tasty Italian food from Capri Pizza.  As we chowed, we watched some more episodes of Ab Fab.  What a delight, and how good it feels just to laugh at silly antics sometimes.  Samael invited me to a potluck on Sunday evening he and his roommate were having.  Their friend from Florida, Amy, along with  her 20 month child, Garnet, were the guests of honor.  So Saturday, I headed over to Safeway to get the fixings for one of my favorite dishes, Whipped Chipotle Sweet Potatoes.  I’m tired of my clothes, but thankfully Crossroads is just around the corner from my place, so I got myself a new outfit for the event.
Saturday night we again met up and went to see Spiderman 2.  How fun.  Lots of action plus and a bit of eye candy I have to say :)   Sunday rolled around and I just relaxed and played my new Star Wars game, Knights of the Old Republic, on my Xbox.  Soon it was time to head to the potluck. It was nice to meet Samael’s friends, plus it was good to see Jenn healing well after her surgery.
Well, here I am on Monday morning, <<sigh>>.  I woke up to a blustery gray day today, and I’m feeling kind of blah.  Must have been the zinfandel/sauvignon blanc combo <<never mix, never worry>> Anyway, I’m off to lunch and the sun is starting to break.  As usual, I hope this work week goes fast.

  • Richie Rich and Samael7's  Road Trip to Napa

My sister Lis had asked me last week if I wanted to journey up and enjoy Napa at her home close to downtown while her and my brother-in-law, Bill traveled to Malibu for a wedding.  Lis has two cats, Mackenzie and Chandler, so I thought it would be perfect to bring up Rex, my cat-lovin' dog.  Needless to say, we all had a great time.  I take that back - Mackenzie loved to stalk Rex and follow his every move while Chandler, the polydactal kitty, hid for most of the duration, occasionally showing up for a meal, and gently hissing to remind us to let him be.  Don't forget to visit Samael7's xanga site (7/12) for a complete run down of the weekend and check out these photos!

  • 4th of July Weekend

And what a long weekend it was!  Friday night was a quiet night.  I went over to Samael7 and brought the makings of one of my favorite and easy soups, Leek, Potato and Tarragon Soup, and Samael prepared a mixed green salad - Yum.  We watched a few episodes of Ab Fab and had laughs.

Saturday I finally got around to cleaning and organizing my room.  Yes, I can now see the floor :)   and Rex can navigate a little easier too.

Sunday, I had a great time bartending at a 4th of July party in a penthouse suite overlooking the bay.  Too bad the fog came in pretty heavy before the fireworks but no matter, it was fun, and as a San Franciscan, one usually expects it to be foggy on the 4th.  Samael got a chance to meet some of my long time friends there, as well.

Monday was pretty mellow, I think I should have took it easy with an extra day off, but nonetheless fun was to be had.  The evening ended off with Indian food delivered and a few Simpson episodes.  By the way, for Simpson fans I've come across this great search engine I'd like to share, and it works pretty well.

I think this week will fly by fast.  I'm off this upcoming weekend to Napa to take care of my sister's cats.   It'll be a nice get-away and  I need some sun!!

  • My Own Personal Pride Weekend

Well, there was much buzz in the air here in the Castro with all the visitors and locals converging into the city.  Samael7 and I hooked up after work Friday and dined early at Chez Spencer.  What a fabulous French restaurant tucked away in the Mission, I'll definitely return there and recommend to friends.  As we were walking distance to South of Market, we decided to take a seedy change of venue and headed over to Hole in the Wall, amongst a couple other pubs.

Saturday morning we headed over to Ti Couz for some sweet and savory crepes (yum!), in the evening we definitely decided to avoid all the hoo-haa of Pink Saturday and headed over Jenn's place for game night and Indian food.  I was pleased to meet Dobson, Jenn's new kitten - what a rambunctious fellow.  Heading back into the Castro after midnight, hundreds of people spilled onto Church Street - until 3:30 AM!  It was definitely a noisy night.

Sunday, Samael7 and I started off the morning early, the sun out and shining, and we had full intentions to get out and join the festivities.  As we started to watch the televised coverage of the parade, mimosas were definitely in order.  Ok, so we didn't get to the parade or Civic Center, we did head out for a bit to the Pilsner for a little celebrating.

In the end, it was a great pride weekend!

  • Game night

Had a great night last night.  I met up with Samael7 after work for some dinner at La Mediterranee, a beer at the Detour, then off to play his computer game of Neverwinter Nights.  Pretty engaging and the graphics and storyline are riveting.  I'll have to get my own copy so I can join the online version.  It does take awhile to figure out the keys, movements, etc., but I realized last night I have a patient and accomodating mentor.

  • Rich's first blog - Ever

I'm glad Samael7 told me about, and inspired me to join Xanga.  I'm (as always) happy to be part of the in-crowd!  I moved to my new apartment and also started a new job the first of May.  Life is going well, I have to say.  I have a 13 year old Sheltie, named Rex that has been my best pal for so long!

Pride events are ahead of us, the longest days are now >=, Safeway is just a swats away, I got a great new man on my side, all is well in my world...

    Rich.
